Dream Lover – Sydney Lyric Theatre
Brought to you by Nuffnang and Dream Lover
On Monday I was lucky enough to attend the media launch of Dream Lover, a new musical that opens later this year at the Sydney Lyric Theatre. Dream Lover is the extraordinary story of Bobby Darin and we were told that his life was stranger than fiction so it’s sure to be an amazing story and stage production.
I was pretty excited to be going out on a ‘school night’ and hadn’t been to the Sydney Lyric Theatre for a while. The last time I was there I saw Dusty (the musical about Dusty Springfield), which coincidentally was co-written by John Michael Howsen who co-wrote Dream Lover with Frank Howsen. I’ve always loved musicals and come from a pretty musical family. My father and his father were brass band conductors and could both play multiple brass instruments. Growing up I was in my local brass band (kind of had to be when your dad was the conductor) and my instrument of choice was the tenor horn. I was also in many drama, music and singing groups and was always in the school musicals.
Now I’m a grown up I usually stick to going to musicals and productions rather than being in them. My mum shares my love of musicals and stage productions and she is usually my ‘date’ on those occasions. We love musicals! So mum was super duper excited when I told her about Dream Lover.
So I’m assuming everyone has heard the song Dream Lover, it’s almost legendary.
Dream Lover the musical is said to capture the glamour and passion of the big band era, the Rat Pack in Vegas and the Golden Age of Hollywood, a time of trail-blazing stars, knock-out fashions and life-changing events. At Monday’s media event we were introduced to the two lead cast members – David Campbell who plays Bobby Darin and the lovely Hannah Fredericksen who plays Sandra Dee, Darins wife (you know the one…look at me I’m Sandra Dee).
We were also treated to a few musical numbers from the show with a swooning David Campbell who does a mean Bobby Darin with an accompanying 18-piece big band! It was pretty amazeballs and I can only imagine how awesome the actual show will be when it opens.
With an amazing cast comprising of over 40 and a fantastic 18 piece big band on stage Dream Lover is set to be a great production. I can’t wait to see this one and find out more about the life and times of Bobby Darin who is much more than just the songs.
Dream Lover is only in Sydney at the Sydney Lyric Theatre opening on 30 September.
Tickets are on sale from 7 April and start from $69.90. You can get your tickets and group bookings through ticketmaster.com.au

April 19, 2016 at 10:39 pmBobby Darin’s “Dream Lover” – the lyrics are genuine and sweet and the fact he wrote it himself adds to the appeal. Melts my heart!
“Dream lover, where are you
With a love, oh, so true
And the hand that I can hold
To feel you near as I grow old”

April 8, 2016 at 1:26 pmFavourite Bobby Darin song is If i were a Carpenter. Love the tempo, lyrics and the premise that love should be about the person not what they do for a living.
